A la Mar (To the sea), a documentary that tells the story of how Peru began to legally protect its waves, won first place in the Perequê-Açú category at the Ubatuba International Surf Cinema Festival (FICSU). The event was held between June 16th and 19th at the Roja Norte beach in Ubatuba (Brazil), known as the capital of surfing.
The FICSU is an international film festival dedicated to surfing and shows audiovisual projections of all kinds that have this sport as the main theme. The festival has five categories and trophies, where four are issued by decision of a specialized jury and one by public choice.
The Peruvian documentary, Bruno Monteferri's first medium-length film, competed in the Perequê-Açú category, which rewards beginning directors.
This award was issued by the specialized jury of FICSU and is the fourth that A la mar has won since its premiere in 2018. Likewise, this production by Conservamos por Naturaleza, which had the support of the Patagonia brand, has been part of the selection official of more than ten international film festivals.
About To the sea
This film tells how a group of surfers mobilized to protect the waves of Cabo Blanco from constructions in the area. This generated that, in the year 2000, the Law of Breaks was approved, which guarantees the conservation of the waves through their registration in the National Registry of Breaks (Renaro).
However, to achieve registration, technical files were needed so that each wave could be protected. For this reason, in 2017 the citizen campaign HAZla por tu Ola was created, which aims to raise the necessary funds for the preparation of said files required by the Peruvian Navy.
Thanks to the efforts of citizens, organizations and companies, there are 43 waves that are legally protected on the Peruvian coast.

Let's save the waves of Negritos
Since its creation, thousands of people and dozens of companies have joined HAZla Por Tu Ola, managing to protect 43 waves in Peru. Currently, we have an active campaign to protect the Negritos Break. From HxO, we seek to complete our fundraising goal to carry out barimetry studies and technical files in order to record the waves of Negritos in RENARO and, thus, protect this breaker.
You can join the campaign through direct donations from US$30, depositing in our account 193-2093463-0-89 of the Credit Bank of Peru (BCP) in the name of the Peruvian Society of Environmental Law (SPDA).
