San Bartolo is the ideal place to practice multiple nautical sports, besides having the perfect wave in order to practice and develop one’s surf skills. To the north of the district, we can find big waves for surfing, like Peñascal and El Huayco - these two surf breaks are also part of the 100% legally protected waves, due to the support from local surfers and institutions which also formed part of the campaign.
The 17th December, the dictatorial resolution was signed to protect the San Bartolo breaks. The technical record covers the San Bartolo district and protects six new breaks: Santa Rosa, El Huayco, Peña Roca, Peñascal, Muelles de San Bartolo and San Bartolo Sur; an area of 727640.847 m2. The approval of the technical records enrolls these surf breaks in the national register of 100% legally protected waves (ley 27280 - Ley de preservación de rompientes aptas para la práctica deportiva.)
With this case we close 2018 with 33 legally 100% protected waves!
Fundraising was effectuated thanks to the San Bartolo Surf Club. Between the representatives, we mention Nino Lauro, Fabio Balducci, Cesar Berthalmess, Roberto Maza, Sebastián Alarcón and Fernando Ortiz de Zevallos, due to their outstanding participation.
Special mention to the main sponsors like SUZUKI, for the zone of “Muelles de San Bartolo” (San Bartolo piers); EUROMOTORS for the rest of surf breaks. Also, for those who joined with their contributions like CRL Surf Team, Javier Rehder, Jorge Rehder and Jorge Berthalmess. Again, a thank you to Entertainment Productions and all of those who contributed with their grain of sand in order to raise 50, 470 Soles, necessary for the protection of waves.
We are raising funds with the goal of protecting three more breaks to the North of Peru: El Ñuro, Mnáncora and Los Órganos, beach where our twice national champ, Titi De Col seeked to coexist with nature and the waves from the north of the country, site for which ‘A La Mar has dedicated it’s documentary, narrating the story of how Peru began to protect its waves.
Through the different presentations of the documentary, such as the preview in the store of Patagonia, in Lima and the premiere of “A la Mar” next to key people; form part of the story of this campaign. With such projections and presentations, we have been able to raise funds to protect other waves which are endangered in the Peruvian coastline.
We still have a long path to go through and you can be part of it. Help us inspire more people to take action for conservation, until we reach the day where all of our waves are protected.

In order to enroll each particular wave in the national register of surf breaks (meaning the wave is 100% legally protected), we need to elaborate a scientific record which is presented to the DICAPI. This document costs between 8,000 and 15,000 soles. The FENTA (national surf federation) has identified 144 surf breaks along the coast of Peru. The route is long, but it is achievable with the support from municipalities, companies, athletes, travelers, and every individual which values the importance of taking advantage of our coastline without destroying it. Together, we have been able to raise $80,000 and protect 24 surf breaks which are considered emblematic in Peru. For 2018, we seek to raise funds for financiate the technical records which will allow the protection of Peñascal (San Bartolo), El Huayco (San Bartolo) and Puerto Viejo.
